This week Jami Fregeau - The Neurodivergent Nurse - takes the lead on researching and tells Katie about how Paul "Buster" Murdaugh - accused murderer who himself was murdered by his own father - had ADHD. We discuss the darker sides and signs of ADHD in teens and young adults including the downfalls of substance abuse, emotional dysregulation, and how white privilege can actually handicap you more than ADHD ever could. It's the last week before Garet comes back from maternity leave and we are SO GRATEFUL that Jami made time for us in her supremely busy schedule to cover this topic for us. Would you like to hear more about ADHD and criminal activities/propensities? If so - tell us on social media on Instagram @thebarisanklehigh.
If you want to support us - the best way to do that is to leave us a 5-star and/or written review everywhere you can find our podcast! Once again we are joined by Jami Fregeau, The Neurodivergent Nurse, and this week we are discussing a new study published by Standford University researchers where they managed to isolate specific genes related to, and potentially causing, Autism Spectrum Disorder. We discuss the unique features of human brain development (as opposed to ape or other lab animal brain development) and get into how the researchers were able to narrow things down and see brain cells reach out to each other LIVE in a petrie dish! Katie & Jami also discuss the prevalence of epilepsy in folks who also have ASD, including how partial lobectomy treatment can cure someone of their epilepsy and the ladies discuss how and why that can be a viable treatment. At one point, Katie also mentions her cousin, Henry - if you're interested in learning more about Henry's condition, you can go to www.forhenryAHC.org

This week Katie is joined by the incalculably talented Katie Charlwood, host of the history podcast Who Did What Now?, the history podcast that's NOT your history class. Ms. Charlwood also has ADHD, so the Katies get into discussion on podcasting when the rejection sensitivity and justice sensitivity get to be too much to bear. The ladies delve into the ethics of true crime podcasts as a branch of history podcasting and the importance of getting the names of historical figures correct and not changing names so they're easier or more comfortable for you to say - looking at you Erzebet Bathori and Grainne Mhaol, the pirate queen of Connacht, who Google will tell you are Elizabeth Bathory and Grace O'Malley, respectively. You can find Katie's podcast on your favorite podcast streaming platforms with new episodes dropping every Tuesday - and make sure you follow her on IG at @whodidwhatnowpod

It is the conclusion of our 3-part series on the history of Pennhurst State School and Hospital and this week Katie did a lot of spooky research that, honestly, scared the crap out of her. We also discuss the ethics of participating in ghost hunts and haunted houses in places like Pennhurst where the history of the location is truly traumatizing for the residents who were subjected to the torture and confinement. We also take a pretty crazy detour back into werewolf porn and Katie confesses perhaps the most embarrassing thing about herself.
Make sure you're following us on IG, FB, and Threads @thebarisanklehigh and leave us a 5-star review anywhere you can find us but especially on Apple Podcasts because those written reviews really help other people discover us!

Welcome to Part 2 of our 3 part series on the history of Pennhurst State School. Last week we covered the history through Mr. Bill Baldini's expose that showed just how extreme the abuse of children and handicapped people was at the Pennhurst institution. From deliberately degrading patients, causing intense physical pain to exert authority and control, to the legislature denying the medical need for female patients to have bras, the abuse was infected into every ounce of this place. This week, though, Katie tells us the history of all the lawsuits and the federal criminal indictments against Pennhurst workers that finally caused the closure of the school on December 9, 1987, one day before Katie made her grand entrance earthside and really started to wreck havoc.

What was Pennhurst State School? Was it a school? A hospital? A mental health treatment facility? Turns out it wasn't really any of those things and instead is better identified as "Pennsylvania's Shame." The Pennhurst State School was borne out of a eugenicist idea that individuals with intellectual, developmental, or physical disabilities are "other" and should not be permitted to intermingle with "preferred" society. For 80 years, Pennhurst State School was a place where suffering was the norm and no one cared. In 1968, however, a local news reporter named Bill Baldini produced a multi-part expose on the "school" which lead to some immediate reforms but also - and critically - many lawsuits. In part 1 of our 3 part series on Pennhurst, Katie teaches us the history of the institution up to and including Mr. Baldini's report.

This one comes at you from our Patreon Dysfunction Junction Vault - even though Garet is on maternity leave when you're hearing this, that will be over soon and we'll be back on our Dysfunction Junction bullshit train. Meaning that more of this mayhem will be available EXCLUSIVELY on Patreon soon. But this episode is just too good to not share with everyone. Stemming from a different Patreon episode we released back in April 2023, this week Katie gives Garet a baby shower gift of the story of the feud between Betty White and Bob Barker that somehow involves making a giant silicone elephant vagina and date raping elephants on the plains of the Serengeti. Tune in to find out what the hell that word soup sandwich means and share us with your friends!

If Solange Knowles , Michael Phelps, Simone Biles, and Trevor Noah walk into the Barbie Movie, who is the first one to say "we should see that" to a preview that comes on? The answer is Greta Gerwig because she has ADHD, too!Recently, a lot of neurodivergent celebrities have been in the news, so Garet sat down and figured out which of these celebs had ADHD and teaches Katie about how they each handle their diagnosis and their fame, and it turns out that all of these people are the GOATs of their own fields. Pretty neat, if you ask us! So tune in for this relaxed fit Ankle High Listicle, complete with our first use of our spooky season theme song right now!

This week we're diving into another hashtag trendy diet that most of us have heard of if not tried. Whole30 is an elimination diet where you don't eat anything except for meat and juice....okay not really but it's really weird the things that you CAN and CANNOT eat on this diet and Katie breaks it down with Garet giving a vegetarian's perspective. So make some tea, sweeten it with honey, and curl up to listen to this week's episode that will, if anything, give you a new appreciation for beans!

Garet takes the lead on this really interesting episode that delves into types of therapy that we've never heard of! Thank you so much to our listener who recommended this topic to us! The first topic we discuss is called Eye Movement Desensitization and Reprocessing (EDMR) therapy which was invented by mistake and can help folks struggling with traumatic memories and events in their past to process those memories without even necessarily having to talk about what happened! The other technique we discuss is called Brain Spotting, where someone uses a laser pointer and distracts you like a cat. Not really, but kind of!
