Episode 37: The Smurfening

Thursday Apr 27, 2023

Thursday Apr 27, 2023

Welcome back to the conclusion of our series on Essential Oils! This week we learn about different health claims made by various essential oil companies including some companies that promise to help you lose weight by eating essential oils, and we delve into the rat-infested waters that are made up by predatory claims about using essential oils to treat or even "cure" ADHD and Autism Spectrum Disorder in children. Don't worry though - we also finish by telling you what to look for on the label when shopping for your own essential oils, best practices, and different trade unions and international organizations that you can use to verify whether your aromatherapist or essential oil product is safe, vetted, and not the result of a pyramid scheme.

Episode 36: Emelems? No, M-L-Ms

Thursday Apr 20, 2023

Thursday Apr 20, 2023

Oh boy we sure hope you're ready to tumble down the absolute sunken gravy train of a disaster that the world of Essential Oils brings us to this week! Katie takes a lead on research and she's teaching us all about what an essential oil is - Why are they essential? Can I eat them? Why does the girl who was mean to me in high school keep trying to get me to "join her team" in order to sell them? We have answers, but you're not going to like them. Part 1 of our series on Essential Oils teaches us what these things are and the man behind the founding of one of the most notorious essential oil pyramid-style-marketing businesses in the world - Donald Gary Young (a/k/a D. Gary Young) and the business he founded: Young Living. Make sure you're following us on Instagram @thebarisanklehigh because the comments on our posts this week are sure to be EXTRA spicy with a side of cinnamon bark oil!

Episode 35: Small Scale Prizes

Thursday Apr 13, 2023

Thursday Apr 13, 2023

A few weeks ago, we discussed ADHD & Stimming -- and in that episode Katie gave us a hint as to a future episode. Well, this is that episode! This week we are discussing Sensory Processing Disorder. SPD is not a separate and distinct diagnosis but it is something that, surprisingly, exists on a spectrum, and can effect everything from being thrill-seeking to having such severe texture aversions to food that you can't eat. We also dip our toe into the apraxia pool but will stay in the shallow end for now because that will be it's own entire episode eventually. As usual, we take some side quests into our Xena fangirling in the 90's, confusing all superheroes as "the man in the cape," and fight the patriarchy at the end of the episode.
The best way to support us is to share our episodes with your friends and family and write us a review on your favorite podcast streaming platform. You can also follow us on Instagram at @TheBarisAnkleHigh and participate in our weekly episode title polls.

There's an extra dose of dysfunction in this episode but we think it fits since we're talking about how the computers are all trying to take our jobs and the best way to fight back! Okay not really - but we are talking about Artificial Intelligence (AI) and Algorithmic Bias in Healthcare today. Piggybacking on our episodes about Medical Bias (#29 and #30, in case you want to re-listen real quick), this episode was recommended to us by a listener and we take a look at what AI in Healthcare looks like, what it is used for, and why it can be a problem. Hospitals and doctors use AI every day to help diagnose and treat patients - but what happens when the mathematic equation (a/k/a ALGORITHM) used to get those diagnoses was written by someone who is biased? Or what happens when the data we used to create that algorithm is all skewed in the first place? We also talk about ways to combat those problems, so don't worry - it's not the worst thing to ever happen, unless you ask Garet, in which case, the world is ending.

Welcome back for Part 2 of Garet's deep dive in PCOS -- this week we're delving into PCOS and infertility issues. Garet shares with us what she had to go through to conceive little baby Gandalf Shrek Junior and everything that entailed -- if you've never tried to get pregnant before this is a must listen because we learned even more about how things are NOT the size of cheerios. If you have gone through infertility or are currently in it, our hearts go out to you and we would love to hear your stories, so head on over to our Instagram @thebarisanklehigh to share with us if you want!

Episode 32: Dewy Side Effects

Thursday Mar 23, 2023

Thursday Mar 23, 2023

We're going back to the hormone monsters for part 1 of our exploration of Poly-Cystic Ovarian Syndrome (PCOS) and what having that actually does to your body (and your hormones). Coming off four hormone episodes and our medical bias episodes, we think you'll really enjoy this deep dive into reproductive health and how our reproductive organs can actually maybe cause diabetes??? That's right we also take a dip into the insulin pool but don't worry we stay in the shallow end -- this time.

Welcome to our episode on PTSD -- you may think it has nothing to do with ADHD, but you'd be wrong! It turns out, the amount of overlap between PTSD and ADHD is alarming and frequently leads to misdiagnosis, especially in children. Katie takes us on a deep dive into brain chemistry and surviving mayhem, we gene splice ourselves with fainting goats, and Garet did her best to trip us and run away faster so the bears would eat us first. Nice, Garet. Real nice. But at least now we know how to introduce yourself to a bear in the wild and that you should probably not feed toddlers to bears. Maybe.

Episode 30: In-DOCTOR-ination

Thursday Mar 09, 2023

Thursday Mar 09, 2023

Welcome back to Medical Bias Part 2 - Giant Trigger Warning at the top here because we start out discussing racial medical bias in healthcare. Some BIPOC creators we love who are way better at expounding the details on this topic are (on Instagram) @rachel.cargle @ibramxk @nikolehannajones @decolonize__ (two underscores) and  @upsettingthesetup .
In addition to our discussions on racial disparities in healthcare, we also discuss medical bias when it comes to ADHD and neurodivergent conditions. Garet continues her angry crusade, but at least we have a new dream about cheese and having Sam Neil on our podcast some day. Who doesn't love a man who loves ducks?
Please remember two write us a 5-star review anywhere you can - especially Apple Podcasts, as the written reviews are what really drive us up the charts and help us out on the business side of things.

Episode 29: Angry Garet Noises

Thursday Mar 02, 2023

Thursday Mar 02, 2023

Time to buckle up because this week Katie takes us all on a journey of anger and re-discovering all the things we already knew as women existing in the world. This week we start our dive into medical bias -- starting off with - did you know there are FIVE types of biases? Some alarming statistics send Garet on a spiraling rabbit hole of anger and grunty noises while we round out the episode discussing medical bias in obesity. According to one study, doctors who responded to the survey viewed obese patients as noncompliant, lazy, and combative, much in the same way those doctors viewed people in the midst of substance addiction and extreme mental health crises. So we've got that going for us.
If you're not already, follow us on Instagram @thebarisanklehigh and share us with all your friends! We have had so many new listeners lately and we love seeing each and every one of you play along in our weekly poll or share our episodes to your stories! We're finally covering that topic that is the inspiration behind our very first sponsor - STIMMING! What is stimming, why do we do it, and what does it mean? Can stimming actually be good for you? This week Katie handled the research and took us on a deep dive into different types of stimming - auditory, visual, tactile, or balance-based. We also take a dive into using food as a stim to soothe ourselves, and there is a trigger warning when that starts, but you can expect it to begin around the 40:00 minute mark and end around the 1:08:00 minute mark after that -- we have inserted music to indicate when that portion of the podcast begins and ends in case you need to fast forward.
Garet also hits us with some critical human resources information and some big little changes coming to the podcast this year. We're so excited to continue to grow this show with you all and thank GLOB Garet got Katie onto the pre-recording schedule a year ago because this would be one hell of a transition if we hadn't started that way from the beginning.
